It’s October in South Cove, California, and the locals in the quaint resort seem to be happily pairing off in the lull before the holidays. Everyone, that is, except for Jill Gardner’s elderly aunt, who just dumped her besotted fiancé—and she won’t say why.
When Jill hosts a talk at Coffee, Books, and More on the topic of elder abuse, all that’s really on her mind is lunch. But the topic hits close to home when she discovers Aunt Jackie has been getting mysterious calls. Jill’s certain the caller is a con artist, of course, but her feisty aunt claims to understand this, though she’s still shaken—and Harrold’s still heartbroken. Who’s behind the scam and why was her aunt targeted? When a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill’s detective boyfriend is on the case—and it soon becomes clear no one is safe when a caller from beyond becomes a killer in their midst.
Lynn Cahoon has pulled out all the stops and written a story that tugs at the heartstrings and then some!
This opens with the monthly meeting of the shop owners, the visiting speaker (Paula) is talking about Elder Abuse (but it would help if she was a little more forceful when speaking), it is a day or so later that Jill suddenly puts the clues together and realises that something along those lines seems to be happening to her Aunt Jackie – which could account for why she suddenly dropped Harold, even though she still seems to really care for him. Jill eventually manages to get out of her Aunt that she has been receiving calls from her husband … who died 20 years ago! This is why she dumped Harold as obviously she can't marry him if her husband is still living. Greg starts to look into things but has to take a step back from this as there is a murder, and Paula seems to be the suspect for this, everything seems to be circling around elder abuse and a con and Jill is determined that no one else should be hurt.
Add in the Mayor panicking that Greg will stand against him in the upcoming elections, Jill's friend Farrah trying to sort her wedding out and another friend Sadie (who makes all the delicious desserts that Coffee, Books and More sell) taking Paula under her wing and trying not to show that she is in love with the local Pastor and we have a mish mash of tales that make a fantastic whole (and I can't wait to see what happens next!)
An Interview With A Character
What is your full name?
Jillian Lorraine Gardner
What is your Profession?
Bookstore/coffee shop owner – Coffee, Books, and More is the only coffee shop and bookstore in South Cove California.
What is your current favourite book or movie?
Hmmm, book is a hard one. I always think the one I’m reading is my favorite. But I’m kind of in love with Neil Gaiman right now. I think American Gods is crazy good. I didn’t like the television series as well as I loved the book. Favorite movie is Sleepless in Seattle. An oldie but a goodie.
What is your go to comfort book or movie?
Comfort movies are the Harry Potter series. I’ll sit and do a marathon over a weekend and it always makes me feel better. Supernatural (the television show) is like that for me. I can watch a show and know that the good guys are going to win the battle, if not the war.
Comfort book is Illusions by Richard Bach. It’s a feel good, you’re in charge of your life no matter what short read.
If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?
I’m thinking Sandra Bullock would be a perfect me. IF she could get her hair to curl. Since I live on the coast, my hair is always tightly curled. ☺
What is your ideal evening?
I love curling up on the couch. Greg by my side and Emma lying on the floor. Typically we enjoy watching movies together, but if he’s watching sports, I’ll be sitting there with my nose in a book. Which keeps me informed for my bookstore shifts.
