Professional pet sitter Daphne Templeton loves the holidays in Sylvan Creek, Pennsylvania. And nothing gets her into the spirit more than the town's annual Bark the Halls Ball. The whole community will be there to wag their tails, especially this year's special guest–Celeste "CeeCee" French, founder of a national chain of pet care franchises, who's returning home to announce plans for a bright new flagship store.
But not everyone's celebrating CeeCee's homecoming. Daphne's friend Moxie Bloom, owner of Spa and Paw, a unique salon for people and their pets, has plenty to growl about. So when CeeCee is found face down under Sylvan Creek's town Christmas tree, stabbed with a distinctive pair of professional-grade pet shears, suspicion lands squarely on Moxie. Despite Daphne's promises to Detective Jonathan Black, she quickly reprises her role as amateur sleuth. Ably assisted by her basset hound sidekick, Socrates, she must hurry to prove her friend's innocence before a killer barks again . . .
An Interview With A Character
What is your full name?
Daphne Templeton
What is your Profession?
I’m a pet sitter, and I also recently opened a bakery for pets called Flour Power. (I’m kind of a hippie throwback.)
What is your current favourite book or movie?
I wouldn’t say the movie is exactly current, but every year the old-time theater in my hometown of Sylvan Creek, Pennsylvania, has a free showing of It’s a Wonderful Life. (Well, it’s kind of free. You have to bring a donation for a local pet charity, which everybody is happy to do.) It’s such a sweet tradition!
What is your go to comfort book or movie?
That would be the 1963 classic The Incredible Journey, about two dogs and a cat who find their way home against all odds. Not only does it always make me cry, but as someone who always has a house full of pets, I love how the animals work together to reunite with their people.
If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?
Maybe Ellie Kemper, if she put on a big wig of unruly, dirty-blond curls. I’m kind of a klutz, and I like to laugh, so I think she could portray me pretty well!
What is your ideal evening?
I’m a homebody at heart. I like to snuggle in at my tiny house in the woods, Plum Cottage, with my favorite basset hound sidekick, Socrates, and my temperamental black Persian, Tinkleston, and bake – in hopes that my sister, Piper, my best friend Moxie Bloom – or maybe Detective Jonathan Black will stop by with his dogs, Axis and Artie. I’ll admit that I didn’t always appreciate Jonathan’s surprise visits, which usually meant I was being accused of tampering with evidence – or murder – but he’s definitely grown on me.
