Brooklyn's oh-so-proper future in-laws are traveling from England to meet her, and if that's not enough to set her on edge, rumors abound that the charming Courtyard Shops across the street may be replaced by high-rise apartments. Their trendy neighborhood will be ruined unless Brooklyn and her fiancé, Derek Stone, can persuade the shopkeepers not to sell.
But with a rare edition of Alice in Wonderland causing bad blood at the Brothers Bookshop and a string of petty vandalism making everyone nervous, Brooklyn and Derek feel like they're attempting six impossible things before breakfast. Then the owner of the Rabbit Hole juice bar is felled by his own heavy shelves, and the local cobbler lies dead beside him. An accident . . . or something more sinister? Things get curiouser and curiouser when a second priceless copy of Alice is discovered. Will it stir up more trouble within the close-knit community?
As the Brits descend, Brooklyn learns they're not so stuffy after all. Derek's dad is won over with chocolate cream pie, and his psychic mum would kill to help Brooklyn solve this murder—before another victim takes a tumble.
If you can laugh out loud at murder then Kate Carlisle makes it happen!
Brooklyn is antsy, no forget that she is headed for full blown panic as her future in-laws are due to arrive, well that would be worrying enough BUT her parents are also going to be staying and Brooklyn is scared that her mother will go all hippy dippy, new age Pagan and make Mr and Mrs Stone wonder about the family their son is about to join! To distract herself she heads to their neighbouring shops, a nice eclectic mix of health food, books, hats and even a cobbler, but one of the best is the pie shop and as Derek has mentioned his dad loves pie Brooklyn plans to head there and buy something nice, oh after the bookshop. Any bookshop would be a magnet for Brooklyn but this one is a mix of both new and used AND it has a locked case with a second first edition Alice in Wonderland in it (so called because the original first run was re-called by Lewis Carroll when he saw the illustrations were not up to snuff – there are a few of the first first editions around mind you!), so far so good but Brooklyn being a murder magnet soon finds a body and an injured health food shop owner.
Now she and Derek are helping Inspector Lee to find out the truth … oh and the worry about the in-laws? totally unfounded, Meg and John Stone want to help where they can … oh and Meg claims to be psychic and has hit it off with Brooklyn's Mum, John is getting on great with her Dad and this means the only fly in the ointment is the murder!
