Murder in the Afternoon

Dead one minute …

Young Harriet and her brother Austin have always been scared of the quarry where their stonemason father works. So when they find him dead on the cold ground, they scarper quick smart and look for some help.

Alive the next …

When help arrives, the quarry is deserted and there is no sign of the body. Were the children mistaken? Is their father not dead? Did he simply get up and run away?

A sinister disappearing act …

It seem like another unusual case requiring the expertise of Kate Shackleton. But for Kate this is one case where surprising family ties makes it her most dangerous yet – and delicate – yet …

I found the previous book in the series really heavy going so I started this one with trepidation, I shouldn't have worried! This was a total page turner that had me hooked from very early on.

Kate Shackleton has arrived back from London and is looking forward to some relaxation when there is a knock on the door in the early hours of the morning and a worried woman is on her doorstep, the woman's husband has disappeared, but the thing is their young daughter says she found him dead at his place of work! The police have dismissed this version of events and claim he has up and run away, but Mary Jane says her daughter Harriet is not one for telling tales and so she has come to Kate for help – and then she drops the bombshell that she, Mary Jane, is actually Kate's older sister.

Now with it becoming more personal Kate, her assistant Sykes and her housekeeper Mrs Sugden are digging deeper, only to find lies and misdirection in all areas – can the three of them find the truth? and if so will it mean more tragedy for Kate?
