Risky Biscuits
Risky BiscuitsSugar and Spice Cookbooks’ newest project is a fundraiser organized by the St. Ignatius Crack of Dawn Breakfast Club, famous for their all-you-can-eat biscuits and gravy events. But when a group member is found dead, Sugar and Spice’s priorities change from raising dough to figuring out who put murder on the menu.

The return of former badboy Nick Marchant has stirred the town’s gossips too. Add a few grudges and some old-fashioned greed over a land deal into the mix, and it’s a recipe for mayhem. And when someone serves up a second helping of murder, Sugar and Spice need to sift the guilty from the blameless, or their next breakfast may be their last . . .

I have no idea how I had missed this author and series, but I am glad to be catching up and I hope there will be a lot more to come with this wonderful couple of female sleuths.

Sugar and Spice are helping set out a fundraiser cookbook for a local breakfast club, there are a couple of hiccups but they don't expect the largest hiccup of all to be the death of the organiser, Alma, and when it turns out that her death wasn't the accident that everyone thought Sugar in particular starts to look more closely at people around St Ignatius, one of which appears to be the prodigal son, who is trying to smarm his way back into people's good books. Does he know more about the death than he is letting on, does Alma's grandson? and can the Sheriff sort it out quickly!

An Interview With A Character

What is your full name?

Rosetta Sugarbaker Calloway

Though I have to tell you, almost no one calls me Rosetta. If they do, that a good clue that they don’t really know me. All my friends call me, Sugar.

What is your Profession?

I solve murders. Oh, wait. No, that’s not right. The sheriff was very clear about that.  My business partner, Dixie and I, are not law enforcement and he is. Actually, I’m the co-owner of a cookbook publishing business with my friend, Dixie Spicer. Not the big glossy cookbooks with celebrity recipes, these are small community cookbooks that are mostly sold as fundraisers for various groups, like your town’s centennial celebration, your church’s mission group, or your child’s soccer team.

What is your current favourite book or movie?

My current favorite book is Shell Game by Sara Paretsky which my landlady, Greer loaned me. I just the finished the book and must remember return it to her. Greer is serious about her books! However, I’ve just started Murder at Morrington Hall by Clara McKenna and I’m loving it too. It features an American heiress in Britain in the early 1900s. and I’m loving the historical detail and the characters.

On the movie front, we don’t have a movie theater in town and so most of my movie watching is done in the comfort of my living room. Lately I’ve been re-watching some old romantic comedies so I’d have to say my favorite movie right now is To Catch a Thief. Some movies stand the test of time and what’s not to love about Cary Grant and Grace Kelly and their wonderful banter.

What is your go to comfort book or movie?

My go to book is any Agatha Christie book I can lay my hands on. It’s always a joy to lose yourself in the unraveling of the puzzle and they never fail to suck me in. My comfort movie? I guess I’d have to say Steel Magnolias. I relate because I’ve lived that life – in my case raised by three strong “Steel Magnolia” women, my mother and my aunts. But also, because the characters and the relationships are so rich and real. And, not to mention, hilarious.

If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?

The character I’d want to be in a book would be V.I. Warshawski in Sara Paretsky’s novel.  As a female private investigator, she does things I’d never have the courage to do. She’s strong of mind and spirit and I love her wit. She believes in justice and V.I. lives her beliefs to the fullest.

What is your ideal evening?

My ideal evening is a small gathering of friends with good food and great conversation. A leisurely evening around a fire would make it even better. I like being around people but a small group of seven or eight is the perfect size for me. I love the time to get to know people and chat about the state of things – both big and small.
