Grand Slam Murder
Grand Slam Murder

When the four wealthy widows who make up the venerable Rosalie Bridge Club never get up from their card table, this quiet Mississippi town has its first quadruple homicide. Who put cyanide in their sugar bowl? An aspiring member and kibitzer with the exclusive club, Wendy takes a personal interest in finding justice for the ladies.

She also has a professional motivation. A frustrated society columnist for the Rosalie Citizen, she's ready to deal herself a better hand as an investigative reporter. This could be her big break. Plus, she has a card or two up her sleeve: her sometimes boyfriend is a detective and her dad is the local chief of police.

Partnering up with the men in her life, Wendy starts shuffling through suspects and turning over secrets long held close to the chest by the ladies. But when a wild card tries to take her out of the game, Wendy decides it's time to up the ante before she's the next one to go down . . .

An Interview With A Character

What is your full name?

My name is Wendy Lyons Winchester.   My middle name, Lyons, is my mother’s last name.  She was Valerie Lyons before she was married and was an accomplished artist.  I lost her when I was fifteen to pneumonia. I don’t think I’ve ever really gotten over it.

What is your Profession?

I work as a reporter for the Rosalie, Ms. ‘Daily Citizen’ newspaper.  For three years, I wrote the society column—which included covering weddings and baby showers. I was bored out of my mind.  Then, four wealthy widows were poisoned together at a bridge luncheon, and I went to my editor and asked if I could do background pieces on the lives of these social scions.  When the assignment ended up getting me a promotion to investigative reporter because I solved the case, I felt my journalism degree was finally being utilized properly.

What is your current favourite book or movie?

My current favorite movie isn’t even out yet, but it will be in the fall.  I adored the ‘Downton Abbey’ TV series, and can’t wait for the film to be released.  Most of the actors who charmed me in the series will be back, I understand. I cannot wait to see what will be happening to them.

What is your go to comfort book or movie?

Haha! When I am in the mood for something lightweight, slapstick and silly, I will watch my copy of ‘It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.’  There is so much comic talent in the film, and it’s one, long car chase but so much fun.

If someone was to play you in a movie who would it be? OR what would be the character you would want to be in a book?

Playing me in a movie would have to be Emma Stone who played Skeeter in ‘The Help.’ She has red hair like I do, and she came off as intelligently Southern and not some drawling bimbo.  Too often, Hollywood portrays Southern women (and men) as uneducated hicks with annoying accents, and I am anything but. I am a brilliant amateur sleuth and reporter, but I can also be charming without being a simpering stereotype.

What is your ideal evening?

I enjoy cooking immensely. My mother taught me well, and I consider myself a gourmet.  There is nothing like taking the time to whip up a delicious meal and enjoying a glass of wine while reading a book.  In winter, that would include a roaring fire. But I live so far South, we only get to pick and choose which nights are cold enough.
