An Early Wake

Pub owner Maura Donovan may have Irish kin, but she doesn’t seem to have the luck of the Irish. Who could have foreseen that bringing live music back to Sullivan’s Pub would lead to a dead musician?

Summer is ending in County Cork, Ireland, and with it the tourist season. Expat Maura Donovan is determined to keep Sullivan’s Pub in the black as the days grow shorter—but how? When she hears that the place was once a hot spot for Irish musicians who’d come play in the back room, she wonders if bringing back live music might be Sullivan’s salvation.

As word gets out, legendary musicians begin to appear at the pub, and the first impromptu jam session brings in scores of music lovers. But things hit a sour note when Maura finds a dead musician in the back room the next morning. With a slew of potential suspects, it’s going to take more than a pint and a good think to force a murderer to face the music.

Things are ticking over nicely for Maura, she has found her feet and is making some (very small and gradual) changes to Sullivan's, when a new customer comes in, a student from Dublin called Tim Reilly, and it appears he wants to know all about the live music that was held at Sullivan's back 20+ years ago.  Having got Tim talking with Billy then next thing is musicians turning up for an impromptu "jam" (at this point Maura discovers that the back room which she never uses used to be where they played, there was a small stage area and balconies as well!)

Everything went great on the Saturday of the jam, Sullivan's was packed out (and they took more money than the pub had taken in the previous three months), but then Maura discovers one of the musicians (Aidan Cowley) still in the back room, and by still she means DEAD still.  Maura has no idea how he got back in and whilst at first it seems as though the fiddle player's bad heart had finally had enough, it comes out that the bad heart was given a bit of a helping hand, and then Tim goes missing.

Maura needs to keep the pub running and find out who wanted to ruin such a great evening by committing murder.
